Professional Cleaning of Oxfordshire War Memorials.
Last year, RJS Waste Management added the professional cleaning of a war memorial to its suite of services.
As many commemorate both world wars, most war memorials are over 100 years old. And, according to UK War Memorials, around 7% are in poor to very bad condition.
There’s a need for this specialist cleaning service throughout the UK and we’ve made a start by providing it to local councils and communities in Oxfordshire.
Witney Town Council War Memorial is restored to glory
When providing professional cleaning a war memorial for Witney Town Council, our cleaning team used a special process so as not to damage the stonework:
- A sustainable cleaning agent was used to treat and prepare the stone.
- Gentle pressure washing was used to remove the build-up of moss, algae, dirt and bird guano as well as pot marks left by flower arrangements on the plinth.
- A soft cloth was used to dry the surface and buff up the stone’s natural sheen.
Not only were the natural features of the stonework restored so that the inscriptions and engravings were more visible but cleaning up the stone helped maintain its strength.
The following before and after photos reveal how transformative the cleaning of a war memorial can be.
Bladon War Memorial shines again
For the professional cleaning of this war memorial, similar sustainable cleaning tools and techniques were used to the Witney project. Again, you can see the results in the before and after photos below.
Starting with a lot of lichen and grime embedded, the stonework and plaques have cleaned up beautifully. The Bladon war memorial now shimmers in the sunshine. This gives the community a suitable tribute to the fallen where they can pay their respects.
