Oxford Speedway, Oxford Rising Stars and Abingdon United – all sponsored by RJS Waste Management

RJS Waste Gives Back to Oxford this Giving Tuesday.

Though we support our communities year-round, Giving Tuesday’s an opportunity to shine a light on some of the new sports initiatives we’ve sponsored this year.

Our Managing Director, Russell Shrives, co-founded and launched Oxford’s newest ice hockey team, which nurtures development. After supporting one of our local professional football teams, we sponsored Abingdon United – a small club with a promising future. We also helped welcome back Oxford Speedway after its 15-year break.

What’s Giving Tuesday?

Falling on 29 November, Giving Tuesday is all about encouraging people to do good. This global awareness day, celebrating its 10th anniversary (just like RJS Waste Management!), has grown to inspire millions of people and businesses to collaborate in the act of giving.

It’s a time to donate, share skills and campaign for something you’re passionate about and believe will make a difference. It’s a time to be proud and tell the world about the cause you choose to support. This will not only create more awareness but should also help charities, community sports clubs and others to raise the money they need.

How’s RJS Waste celebrating Giving Tuesday?

We’re involved in the launch and ongoing support of Oxford Rising Stars, a new ice hockey club set up by Russell Shrives and Paul Lynch. And now’s the perfect time to shout about it as what’s Christmas without a bit of frozen stuff?!

Bridging the age gap between Oxford Junior Stars and City Stars, the Rising Stars focuses on developing the sport. It also gives those who don’t have enough time to commit to the City Stars another option to play hockey in Oxford. Games started in September and the season runs until March.

RJS Waste Management is flying the Giving Tuesday banner here as Russell and his colleagues have combined the giving of their time, money and skills to help bring Oxford Rising Stars to fruition. Here’s to 2023 when they’ll continue to thrive!

Other local sports clubs and charities we currently support include:

New to this list for 2022 are Abingdon United and Oxford Speedway.

We sponsored Oxford United through the pandemic when live games were unable to provide the financial backing the professional club needed. But, for the 2022/23 season, we turned our attention to a smaller team located in the same town as our Oxfordshire waste management office – Abingdon-on-Thames. Members of the Hellenic League Division One that play at The Northcourt, Abingdon United has a bright future.

After its much-awaited return as a racing venue this year, Oxford Speedway is home to British Championship League competitors the Oxford Cheetahs and British National League competitors the Oxford Chargers.

We were delighted to sponsor the Speedway this year and took great pleasure in gifting tickets for August’s Oxford Cheetahs v Edinburgh Monarchs race to our clients Thames Ceilings (see photo) who had a fantastic evening out!
