What is asbestos?
A naturally occurring fibre, asbestos was widely used in UK construction until the late 1990s but is now banned as it is a highly hazardous substance. Owing to its strength and resistance to heat and chemicals, it was a popular choice for roofing, insulation and flooring. According to the British Lung Foundation, the three most common types of asbestos fibres used are blue (crocidolite), brown (amosite) and white (chrysotile). Read more about asbestos.
Why is asbestos dangerous?
Fibres are released into the air when Asbestos Containing Materials (ACMs) are disturbed. When inhaled, these fibres can cause serious and often fatal diseases such as mesothelioma, asbestos-related lung cancer, asbestosis and pleural thickening.
According to the Health and Safety Executive:
- Not just a problem of the past, asbestos can be present today in any building built or refurbished before the year 2000.
- Every year, asbestos kills around 5000 workers, more than the number of people killed on the road.
- Every week, around 20 tradesmen die resulting from past exposure to asbestos.
This is what makes our safe and secure asbestos services so important.
