What is asbestos?

A naturally occurring fibre, asbestos was widely used in UK construction until the late 1990s but is now banned as it is a highly hazardous substance. Owing to its strength and resistance to heat and chemicals, it was a popular choice for roofing, insulation and flooring. According to the British Lung Foundation, the three most common types of asbestos fibres used are blue (crocidolite), brown (amosite) and white (chrysotile). Read more about asbestos.

 Why is asbestos dangerous?

Fibres are released into the air when Asbestos Containing Materials (ACMs) are disturbed. When inhaled, these fibres can cause serious and often fatal diseases such as mesothelioma, asbestos-related lung cancer, asbestosis and pleural thickening.

According to the Health and Safety Executive:

  • Not just a problem of the past, asbestos can be present today in any building built or refurbished before the year 2000.
  • Every year, asbestos kills around 5000 workers, more than the number of people killed on the road.
  • Every week, around 20 tradesmen die resulting from past exposure to asbestos.

This is what makes our safe and secure asbestos services so important.

How we work safely with asbestos

You can rest assured that RJS Waste Management is fully insured and industry trained, putting the health and safety of its staff and customers first. When it comes to asbestos services, our qualified and professional team of contract managers and operatives offers:

Asbestos surveys

We are licenced to carry out asbestos management surveys and refurbishment and demolition surveys in accordance with HSG264 Asbestos: The Survey Guide (2012)  and HSG248 Asbestos: The Analysts’ Guide for Sampling, Analysis and Clearance Procedures. The results of which will be sent for analysis at an independent United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS)-accredited lab.

Carried out by our British Occupational Hygiene Society (BOHS) P402-certified surveyors, these asbestos surveys aim to identify if any ACMs are present. We will provide a report with details about their condition and management recommendations. Meaning, whether they should be labelled, encapsulated and/or removed.

Asbestos removal

After an asbestos survey and a risk assessment to identify hazardous waste materials, we will safely handle and remove asbestos-contaminated waste from commercial, industrial and domestic properties.

Our asbestos removal services are carried out by our UK Asbestos Training Association (UKATA) and Asbestos Removal Contractors Association (ARCA) trained contract managers and their specialist teams.

Asbestos collections

Whether they are fly-tipped or part of construction waste, our asbestos collections, will be double-bagged, in line with the Health and Safety Executive’s guidelines, and taken away by our qualified and licenced waste removal team.

What is more, we are an Environment Agency licenced waste carrier and dispose of all ACMs at a secure licensed facility.

Reinstatement works

Whether it is inside or outside your property, roof or ceiling, asbestos removal is destructive and can leave the building hazardous. After having your asbestos materials removed, our skilled and experienced team can provide reinstatement works for these areas to make them safe and functional again.
