Asbestos is a naturally occurring fibrous mineral that is resistant to acids, alkalis, fire and heat. With its high tensile strength, it also makes a good thermal and electrical insulator.

These unique properties resulted in the use of asbestos in a wide range of building materials. This means asbestos can be found in many commercial and domestic properties built or refurbished before the year 2000.

Now it is known how harmful Asbestos Containing Materials (ACMs) are, there is a need to identify where they have been used and whether asbestos removal is necessary. Before any asbestos removal and disposal works start, an asbestos survey followed by a risk assessment is required to identify hazardous waste materials.

Examples of higher risk asbestos waste materials are Asbestos Insulating Board (AIB) and insulation materials such as sprayed coatings. These have the potential to release more fibres than lower risk materials, such as asbestos cement.

RJS Waste Management UK has offices in London, Oxford and Chichester. We specialise in the safe handling and removal of asbestos-contaminated waste from commercial and domestic premises. We are licenced carriers who can also provide asbestos surveys to identify the presence of asbestos. So, if you are looking for reliable and efficient asbestos removal in the south-east, we are here to help.

The asbestos removal process

RJS Waste Management’s UK Asbestos Training Association (UKATA) trained operatives are highly experienced in all aspects of safe and secure asbestos removal, from notifying the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and containment of hazardous waste to transportation and disposal.

  1. Asbestos notification – When asbestos is detected via an asbestos survey and asbestos testing, notification might need to be submitted to the HSE.
  1. Asbestos containment – We will take action to seal off the area where asbestos removal work is required. All waste previously identified as containing asbestos is wrapped or encapsulated. This normally involves the construction of an airtight enclosure and use of specialist air pumps and filters.
  1. Asbestos safety – All our operatives wear special overalls and breathing apparatus and follow careful procedures to decontaminate themselves when leaving the enclosure. They are also required to undergo regular medical checks to ensure that their health is not being adversely affected.
  1. Asbestos removal – Our expertly trained operatives will remove the ACMs and make them safe for transport in line with current health and safety legislation.
  1. Asbestos air testing – After asbestos has been removed from the site, a reassurance air test is usually required. This involves placing pumps in the same area and drawing in air to measure the concentration of any asbestos fibres that may still be present.
  1. Asbestos disposal – The company is an Environment Agency licenced waste carrier and we always dispose of all ACMs at a secure licensed facility.

Asbestos removal advice for homeowners

Homeowners that suspect ACMs may have been used in the construction of their home, inside or outside, should seek professional advice. When the containing material is in good condition, and unlikely to get damaged, it is often best to leave it where it is. Slightly damaged materials that contain asbestos may need to be encapsulated. The use of licenced and trained professionals is always recommended where repairs to, or removals of, asbestos materials are needed.

Some asbestos materials, such as those listed below, should only be removed by an approved asbestos contractor that is licensed by the HSE:

  • Sprayed asbestos coatings
  • Asbestos lagging/insulation
  • Asbestos insulating board

Bonded asbestos products, such as those listed below, present less risk but should be handled with care by an asbestos industry expert:

  • Floor tiles
  • Roof tiles
  • Cement sheets
  • Flues
  • Gutters
