In addition to these regulations the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) regulations also may apply when handling or disposing of materials that are listed in the European Classification, Labelling and Packaging (CLP) regulations.
These substances are categorised according to how dangerous they are. They can be either, very toxic, toxic, harmful, corrosive or irritant.
CLP is based on the United Nations’ Globally Harmonised System (GHS) and over the next few years will be introducing new symbols for labelling hazardous waste. Details of these new symbols and what might constitute a hazardous waste can be found at the HSE’s site
For the last few years the Law has also considered electrical and electronic waste to be hazardous and this is controlled under The Waste Electronic and Electrical Equipment Regulations 2006, details of which you can find here
